I have heard of long pips and short pips
But I see other terms like wide pips and slim pips used in this forum.
I have trouble understanding what they are

Re: Long pips , short pips, wide pips, slim pips > What is the difference
Long pips & short pips are incorrect terms from ITTF LARC standpoint.
Because there is no such thing as "long" pips in ITTF's version of Olympic table tennis
Long pips exist only in non-ITTF table tennis.
Long pips were approved until 1977 when ITTF OFFICIALLY banned all and any pips longe than 2.00 mm at the 1977 Birmingham BGM
The maximum allowed pip length of any pips type rubber was increased from 2.00 mm to 2.05 mm for purely political reasons at the 2024 AGM at Busan South Korea
So the the current maximum allowed length of any pips in ITTF is 2.05 mm
So you cannot call ITTF approved pips as short & long . ITTF does this deliberately to brainwash the clueless pips players most especially chopper
The max allowed pip length is 2.05 mm for ANY pips.
The major two differences are pip width & pip flexibility.
So what ITTF calls short pips (well not ITTF but brainwashed pips players) are therefore wide pips and what ITTF deceptively calls long pips are actually slim pips
Slim pips are slimmer and more flexible than wide pips which are more stiff & wider
Actual long pips that are longer than 2.05 mm are available for use outside ITTF tournaments
You can use them in local clubs , community centers etc.
You can use them in leagues if the club allows it.
You can use them even in non-ITTF tournaments assuming the tournament committee (director) allow it

Re: Long pips , short pips, wide pips, slim pips > What is the difference
The most important difference that newbies do not understand (& the ITTF does not ant them to) is the fact that wide pips ( ika short pips or "out" on ITTF LARC ) is this
1. Wide pips are wider & stiffer (but can be just as long as any ITTF LARC pips of 2.05 mm)
2. ITTF LARC slim pips are not "long" pips but all slim pips on ITTF LARC are deceptively called "long" pips to brainwash the clueless pips players especially the chopper fools. Because, "long" pips were banned at the 1977 Birmingham BGM mostly due to the success of the chopper Liang Geliand & few other Chinese choppers.
3. The difference between the pips type listed on ITTF LARC as "long" and "out" is not the maximum allowed length (It is set at 2.05 mm as of 2025 Busan AGM for any and all pips on ITTF LARC) . The key difference is the width which is defined by a parameter called Aspect Ratio. The "out" pips have a "minimum" required pip width , if they are any thinner they will be called "long" on ITTF LARC

Re: Long pips , short pips, wide pips, slim pips > What is the difference
Stop using the term "short" pips for ITTF "out" rubbers
The correct term is "wide" pips
Stop using term "long" pips for ITTF rubbers listed as "long" on ITTF LARC
They are actually "slim" pips
There are no "long" pips in ITTF table tennis as of 1977,,,,,, just slim pips
Wide pips are wider and stiffer with aspect ratio less than 0.89 on ITTF LARC
Slim pips are slimmer and more flexible with aspect ratio between 0.89 and 1.1 ITTF LARC
Slim pips max allowed aspect ratio was 1.3 until 1998 when it was reduced to 1.1 to reduce their backspin capabilities under fraudulent ITTF claims of reducing deception
The Aspect Ratio limit of 1.3 was imposed in 1983 because the ITTF was convinced (more like compelled) by the ronotNazis that just limiting the maximum allowed pip length to 2.00 in 1977 at Birmingham BGM was not protecting the robotNazi loopers enough despite their being able to use carcinogenic spein glues full of VOC
