Ways to fight China's dominance in table tennis

Post by Renyard »

Here is an interesting idea
If a player participates in WTTTC (World Team Table Tennis Championships) held in even numbered years , that particular player cannot also participate in the next upcoming WITTC (World Individual Table Tennis Championships) held in odd numbered years & vice versa. This could include O;ympics

Of course China has an endless suppy of players & they can startegically distribute their players but hey, it at least gives a better chance of upsets.
Other countries are so bad anyway and it gives other countries more motivation to develop more talent. Since other countries seem to have no chance of winning the WITTCs they may focus more on WTTTC. Though it is sort of pick your poison for other countries, at least there may be a better chance LOL

Another way could be to add 2 doubles.
Team event will be 3 singles & 2 doubles
Each singles player can play only maximum one singles
Of the 3 singles players only one can play in doubles & only in one of the 2 doubles (The other 2 singles players cannot play in doubles)

Again China has endless supply of talent but in doubles other countries may have a better chance.
Also this promotes development of more players in other countries since they will need some doubles specialist in addition to singles players

Regardless , on a related matter, I think it would be more entertaining & probbaly unpredictable , if they made the semi-finals & finals of team events to be best of 7 matches (currenly best of 5) by adding two doubles (no player can play both doubles) .
This would apply not just to WTTTC but would be suggested format to any team event at lower leverls as well such as European Teams or African Teams of PanAm Teams or Oceania Teams or Asian Teams , European Games, Asian Games and so on down.

Looks like they wil have Olympics as mixed (gender) teams. If that is the case Continental games such as Asian Games, PanAm games should also be mixed teams with continental championships reamining as now with separate men & women team events

Mukherjees win over China Re: Ways to fight China's dominance in table tennis

China is much much stronger on womne's side than men in singles.
Ayhika & Sutirtha Mukherjee did by beating the Chinese World Champion doubles pair
The only way any othe rcountry has a remote chance is by adding like two doubles to team events.
Doubles is more a synergy between the two players.
In tennis Indian doubles players have won lots of doubles Grand Slam events

ITTF Mixed World Cup > Re: Ways to fight China's dominance in table tennis

I was looking at the format for ITTF Mixed Teams World Cup 2023

Though Mixed Team Format is a great idea, the proposed fromat IMO is not a great one.

Because Women's & Men's Doubles are played only if needed.
China would end up winning before anyone even gets to the men's & women's doubles as usual LOL

I think the best format would be in the following order (at least for Final's ONLY) if countries other than China can have a chance

1. Mixed Doubles (First)
2. Men's Doubles'
3. Men's Singles (Players from singles not allowed in doubles)
4. Women's Doubles
5 . Women's Singles (last because China is most dominant in Women's singles (Players from singles not allowed in doubles)

Or something like that
