Confusion about sponge & top sheet combinations in ITTF (LARC)

If I put my own sponge on a topsheet, how does that give me an unfair advantage?
How can you check if the sponge is from the manufacturer ir was assemled by the player ?
It may be difficult to do this for an inverted sponge but much easier for any rubber with pips facing out.
