Does it really matter what blade/rubbers to use? Is there a proper combo?
Yes, very much so
For better or worse, table tennis is the most equipment sensitive sport there is.

I was brainwashed twice by the iTTF & its coaches & various ITTF worship forums like (TTDAily, MYTAbleTEnnis.net, OOOAK forum, ect) not once but twiice over a long 40 years (i know......I am stupid & noone else but myself to blame)

I was first brainwashed as a new player for 10 years . Everyone kept telling me that using a dumb racket is the only proper way to play table tennis & smart rackets are for unathletic losers. I did switch to the proper smart racket for my style

But my brainwashing by the ITTF continues for almost 40 years after that till recently. Agsin everyone kept telling me that all new players should start in the sport using a dumb racket. As a coach & admin I shoudl hav eknown better but I did not.
