I tried to re classify Asian (aka penhold) grip types hopefully to be a better tool for coaching on how to exploit the full potential of the penhold grip
It will probably a little confusing at first but should be OK once you think thru it
The racket types
cPen- Chinese Penhold - Racket head shape is usually oval. The handle is identical both sides and player can twiddle the racket. The three fingers (other than the thumb & index used to hold the racket) are usually curled on the back
ojkPen – Old style Japanese Korean penhold – the head shape is usually rectangular. The handle is larger on forehand side and offset from rear side meaning it is much harder to twiddle or play a stroke using the rear side of the racket. So this is an extremely forehand dominant racket & uses only LTPG (see below). No rubber on backside (just paint sheet). Player does not play LRPG or SRPG (see below) . The three fingers (other than the thumb & index used to hold the racket) are usually spread out on the back for a more powerful forehand & may be curled only when playing a TPG lob or a TPG side punch block
njkPen – New style Japanese Korean penhold - the head shape is also usually rectangular but the difference from ojkPen is that the handle on both sides identical but unlike a Chinese penhold , the njkPen has thicker handle both sides with offsets to hold the racket comfortably for a forehand dominant grip
The grip types
LTAG -Legacy Traditional Asian Grip – No twiddling. Only one side of the racket is used. Dumb racket with same rubber used for forehand & backhand. No rubber on backhand. Just paint sheet (No RAG is used or possible)
STAG - Super Traditional Penhold Grip – Smart racket with different rubber types on both sides. Racket gets twiddled but same rubber type is used for forehand and backhand strokes (No RAG is used but the player may actually loop in a TPG mode with rubber from forehand side used on backhand to loop or lob if say is a spinny inverted rubber or flat hit the ball if it is a wide pips rubber)
LRAG – Legacy Reverse Asian Grip – Both sides of racket are used. Rubber types may be same type (dumb racket) or may not be same on both sides (smart racket) but racket is not twiddled. Player only uses forehand rubber on forehand and backhand rubber on backhand. Player does NOT use forehand rubber on backhand as in LTPG or STPG. No twiddling
SRAG – Super Reverse Asian Grip – Both sides of racket are used. Rubber types may be same type (dumb racket) or may not be same on both sides (smart racket) but racket is not twiddled. Player only uses forehand rubber on forehand and backhand rubber on backhand. Player does NOT use forehand rubber on backhand as in LTAG or STAG. But SRAG player twiddles and uses both rubbers on both forehand and backhand but does not play in LTAG or STAG mode, meaning they do not use forehand rubber in TAG style on backhand
LHAG - Legacy Hybrid Asian Grip – this is a combination of LTAG & LRAG. Player uses TPG as well as RPG but player does not twiddle the racket
SHAG - Super Hybrid Asian Grip – This is a combination of STAG & SRAG – Player can use either rubber on either forehand or backhand by twiddling but can also play TPG using either rubber
Re-classifying penhold grip types for clarity (& better coaching)
