I can pretty well chop or push short topspin serves with long pips on my backhand, but with inverted, if the serve is short topspin, it is tougher. I don't really want to flip or block it, as that doesn't get me into the kind of rally that I want. Any suggestions?
So what kind of rally you want then. Unless you flip or block , you are at server's mercy.
It would be vey awkwatd to chop over the table

Given my history, I’ll probably return to the more grippy anti (Best Anti) at some point. Have used it mostly for 30+ years, but I like to experiment with other styles.

Wow , you said you have been in the sport 30 years but have not realized this is one of the favorite basic bread & butter tricks of a pip hating robotNazi , which is to serve to force you to use the inverted side, because they hate returns from long pips side.

Yes, it is a short topspin, and I really want to figure out how to chop/push it. The really tough part is it is not only short, but angled way to the forehand side and it quickly drops off the side of the table. If I don’t get there quickly enough, I am fishing it from the side below the table, and that return is just a set up.
There are a couple of solutions, But before we get into that, you need to understand the very basic concept of serve & serve returns >>
As a server , you want your opponent to return tour serves the way you want, which is fine
But most players do not see the flip side which is, as a receiver you want to force the server the way you want to receive & take away the besy serves of the serever

Solution #1 :- Why are you even allowing the server to serve to your short forehand ? Stand way towards your forehand & crouching well into the table with your backhand on your short forehand side. Your opponent may even luagh at first but it does not matter. You are intimidating & frustrating them by taking away their favorite serve which should ,ake them angry & that is waht you want. But of coutse you should anticipate a different type serve long or short to you backhand and be ready for it.

Solution #2 :- Can you twiddle ? If not , learn it at least for this soultion. Simply twiddle, return with your long pips on your forehand & quickly twiddle back. Of course you should twiddle ONLY after the opponent has tossed the ball. And not before the service toss because they now know your inverted is on your backhand & they will simply serve there
Of course you don't do bot the above every time but mix it up. This should be more than enough to frustarte your pip hating robotNazi opponent

AllenCorn,

I don't mean to askk this in a negative way . but why do you have spinny inverted on your forehand ? Based on you age I was wondering if you learned to loop from your youth or later

If you do not loop ,inverted is a huge laibility unless you have very good reason such as incredibly spinny serves.
If not lose your inverted on forehand & use wide pips with sponge if you attack more or use anti if you chop more on your forehand
Either way the slim pips is the only choice for your backhand & it stays
If you are a chopper anti is the second worst choice as backhand rubber.
Wide pips is the very worst backhand rubber
You can read why at this webpage

All this assuming you are a competitive player .
I know you said you are an EJ & so if you are just playing for exercise ONLY or mostly experimenting as you said, it does not matter what you use
