I was watching this video by PingSkills by Jeff Plumb and Alois Rosario,
PingSkills generally has some good coaching videos but this video is totally off the rails
Both Jeff & Alois are trying hard and struggling to be diplomatic about a seemingly awkward subject.
But to me there is really nothing complicate dabout this.
Because they are are working on the false premise that you are obligated to warmup against your opponent
Truth is you really don't .
Before I comment further , please clearly understand, even if you choose to warmup, the rule does not say
1. you need to warmup AT LEAST 2 minutes .....it is quite the opposite.....the rules say the maximum allowed warmup time is 2 minutes
2. There is no minimum required warmup time ...it can be 0 minutes meaning you do not have to warmup at all
Ok now to the real issue. I have encountered (click link >) robotNazis 4 or 5 times in my life who demanded that I hit using my long pips side. When I politely refused few (click link >) robotNazis actually got visibly upset. So next few times when some other (click link >) robotNazis made the same demand , I would oblige as Alois discusses in the video but all my returns would either go off the table or into the net.
One of the funniest situations I had was in mixed double at a national tournament. My partner also used long pips. I kept hitting only with my inverted side and also asked my partner to do the same. Our opponents were a husband and wife team. Wife demanded that we both hit with our long pips side. I laughed & refused but my partner insisted on being nice. So I took a set and let my partner hit with them. 10 minutes later they were still hitting & wife kept insisting my partner continue the warmup. This was to the point that her husband was extremely embarrassed. It really did not matter much to me because they were about 400 rating points below us & so I thought it was funny. Needless to say we won 3 -0
My point is this. RobotNazis will go out of their way avoiding practising with you at club sessions but in a tournament they expect you to train them to beat you in the 2 minute warmup. I actually seen some chopper morons warming up by chopping using both their inverted & long pips side. How stupid is that OMG.
Alois was saying that if you are a robotNazi , you should find someone else in the place who also uses long pips. Good luck with finding choppers.
Even if the robotNazi finds a chopper to hit, no chopper with half a brain should give free pre match training for free.
Moral of the story.
1. Never ever warmup with your opponent (warmup with someone else ...there are lot more robotNazi loopers to train againt in a pre match)
2. Click link > Never ever trust a table tennis player
So there really is no ethical dilemma. This warmup ritual is a stupid tradition from the good old days or tennis & hardbat tabletennis & other racket sports.
In fact on a different but related story, just before COVID & a week before we knew COVID was coming I posted in ITTF worship forums why shaking hands with your opponents before or after a match is stupid. I got promptly banned from one of the forums & my posts deleted in all forums. Needless to say my posts turned out to be sort of prophetic
Pips players - you stupid fools > No need to warmup > especially against robotNazis
