At the highest levels of the sport , I have seen some amazing doubles matches
If ITTF wants to promote the sport, they not only need just more men's and women's doubles but mixed doubles as well
It may be different in other countries where table tennis is more popular
But in places like USA , doubles is one of the best ways to ease players into the sport by reducing the intimidation level.
When I was involved in running clubs, the higher rated players helped out by playing doubles during regular club sessions.
Each team had a high level player and newbie.
This was not just only a way of teaching doubles rules and tactics.
More importantly it is an indirect way of coaching the newbies themselves.
But I know many players who hate doubles like Cobalt
There are also clubs / centers where doubles are not played at all.
As soon as a newbie walks in there is high pressure sales tactics to sell paid one on one coaching & $500 dumb rackets
But there are obviously lots of doubles haters at pro level too.
Doubles in WTTTC used to be always 3 by 3 singles . Best 5 out of 9
I am not sure if it was anything else long before that
Then in 1991 they had team ties of only 5 matches 4 singles and one doubles with I think each player limited to max 2 matches
Then they switched back to all singles either in 1993 or 1995
In doubles may give some chance for anyone to upset China especially in women
But I don't see ITTF ever bringing back doubles in team event
Though team event since it is a team effort & it makes sense to include at least one doubles or two with a best of 7 (5 singles+ 2 doubles) at least for semi-finals & finals...at least for more drama if anything else since doubles is more unpredictable.
