Note :- ITTF Directory says "Website not available” for websites of National Associations of most countries. it is pathetic on the part of ITTF not to have a fully functional or at least a basic National Association website ( & preferably a Facebook page) as mandatory

Grubba killed by speed glue ?

Post by Glasgow TT »

Google Groups : rec.sport.table-tennis
"Polish national tabletennis player Andreij Grubba died due to lung
cancer caused by extensive and continued use lethal speed glues, as clearly quoted in Chinese newspapers."

This is a very interesting thread on the table-tennis newsgroup. When Grubba died so young I was very surprised that none of the press releases mentioned how he died.

The claim here is that he died from lung cancer caused by excessive exposure to toxic speed glue throughout his career. Sounds plausible since many glues are generally regarded as being fairly nasty stuff. That's why stores sometimes keep them in locked cabinets and don't sell them to children.

Some glues are obviously safer than others but it does make me worry about the widespread use of speed gluing in table tennis, especially when children are being encouraged to learn this at a very early age.

Let's see if Grubba's death changes anything within the sport.
