1. As a player, Jian would be above 2500 using short pips tomorrow with no training (I have played against him with them on, he openly admits to chopping better with them than long pips but cannot adjust to minor tempo differences versus his normal game).
Jian Li's highest USATT league rating is like 2650 with slim flex pips and would probably be 2800 with actual long (flex) pips
So what is you point with him being 2500 with wide (stiff) pips ?
If you want to be a competitive player isn't your goal is is to maximize your rating & success ?
Ot this young girl you are trying ruin the career of , just playing for fun and exercise only ? OMG
This is where you are completely screwed up.AuxPicotsCourts wrote: on Friday September , 12, 2025 8:41 PM #18
2. As a coach, he almost certainly knows more than any short pips chopper you will meet about development of this type of player including most at the professional level - this is likely because he has direct interaction with + access to the best players in the world using this style and talks with them often (e.g. Hou Yingchao). He not only understands the techniques for / nuances of the most difficult shots with the rubber, but also the expected sequences stemming from those shots and the appropriate tempo/footwork. It bears highlighting that he was not only a Chinese provincial team player, but actually a provincial team coach and may actually be a stronger coach than player.
I am not questioning the fact that Jian Li understands how Hou Yingchao etc play using wide (stiff) pips.
But the question rather whether you or this young girl should be using wide (stiff) pips or actual (flex) pips
Players like Hou Yingchao, Han Ying, Honoka Hashimoto , Hitomi Sato Mima Ito etc are NOT successful because they use wide(stiff) pips , but rather, they are successful DESPITE using wide (stiff) pips on the backhand because of their enormous talent.
Because wide (stiff) pips , even modified to act like slim (flex) pips for marketing gimmick purposes by the manufacturers is absolutely not a backhand rubber. It is theoretically the best forehand rubber but even that most shakehanders cannot be successful . Yes there had been a few World Champion penholders using wide (stiff) pips on the forehand.
Johnny Huang is a unique one in a billion exception.
If Jian LI thinks wide (stiff) pips can be used as a chopping tool on the backhand especially for amateurs, neither you nor Jian Li nor this young girl's father have a basic understanding of the differences in operational mechanics between wide (stiff) pips and slim (flex) pips or long (flex) pips.
So if Jian Li allows you or this young girl to use wide (stiff) pips for backhand chopping rather than correct you and make any players like you or this young girl use ONLY actual non-ITTF long (flex) pips, I am sorry, Jian Li is engaging in coaching malpractice.
Listen to me again .
Wide (stiff) pips is not a backhand rubber in ANY capacity and especially for away from the table choppers and most especially for low and mid level amateurs.
Why ? Simply because low and mid level amateurs do not have the feel or athletic skills of a semi-pro or pro chopper to execute chops or vary the spins . It is pure fantasy. ITTF does not want players to use actual long (flex) pips and manufacturers exploit the fact that these high level choppers use wide (stiff) pips to create a hysteria & sell more wide (stiff) pips. The robotNazi controlled ITTF does not want slim (flex) pips or actual (long) pips. They consider it a massive nuisance.
