Many of you already know that ITTF is desperately trying to turn table tennis into pickleball with things like moving towards 44 m ball , TTX etc.
The assumption is that it would then make table tennis wildly popular like pickleball or tennis.
No it won’t
Yes there is no denying the glory days of hardbat table tennis (somewhat like pickleball) era was great. But it is is time to move on.
Sponge domain table tennis can NEVER be like pickleball. The soul & essence of table tennis is spin & this is what distinguishes table tennis from other racket sport. Yes spin is critical in other racket sports as well but not like in table tennis. If you keep trying to cut the head of table tennis (spin) , it would die.
I have lot of details based on history of these sports but I will add them later so as not to cause an information overload in just one post & I am rightly accused of doing often by others
BTW table tennis for the most part is also largely a participant centric sport and not a spectator oriented sport
Anyway without much details to start with , here is my crazy thought (as a former tennis player whose peak level was probably slightly higher in tennis than table tennis in my playing peak during my younger years)
Table tennis should not try to become pickleball.
But in fact it is the other way around.
Pickleball & tennis , since they are well established now, should try to become like table tennis
Both pickleball and tennis could use (click link >) smart rackets like table tennis does , instead of using dumb rackets
I will provide smart racket details for tennis & pickleball in my next post
BTW pickleball has slightly moved in this direction. Initially all pickleball paddles were wood to keep spin an absolute minimum. Now that they have become so popular & have captured the market , the commercial profit angle has kicked in & now almost all paddles are composite materials with probably with more spin (Though I am aware that spin is still regulated in pickleball by regulating all paddles)
Stay tuned
Pickleball (& tennis) should try to be more like table tennis now, using smart rackets
